Segavibes is an independent record label specialising in music from the Seychelles, solely because it is our culture. Our primary aim is to celebrate the cultural and artistic richness of our Seychellois community and to promote the diversity of its music.
Seychelles is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Kenya. The nation is an archipelago of 115 tropical islands with two distinct collections of islands, some comprised of granite and others of coral. Mahe is the largest island and is the site of Victoria, the capital. Most Seychellois are descendants of early French settlers and the African slaves brought to the Seychelles in the 19th century by the British, who freed them from slave ships on the East African coast. Indians and Chinese (1.1% of the population) account for the other permanent inhabitants. Seychelles culture is a mixture of French and African (Creole) influences. Creole is the native language of 94% of the people; however, English and French are commonly used. Seychelles music is generally classified into three types, such as the moutia, sega, and contredanse music, all of which are accompanied by dance.
Moutia is a traditional dance that is closely associated with the African heritage of the Seychellois people, with it roots born during the days of slavery. Two men told stories about the hard labors of the day, women then joined in to dance accompanied by singing and chanting. The 'moutia sound' is created on large flat drums made from goatskin and tuned over a fire prior to being played then performed by the fireside, with men and women facing each other.

The most popular dance genre of the island, Sega is a tantalizing hip swaying regional dance accompanied by guitars, drums and even synthesizers.
With its roots in England and France, Contredanse is a country style dance, and is a blend of Berliner, polka, and waltz dances. This is played to a fiddle, accordian, drums, triangle and banjo with a ‘komander’ vocalist calling the moves . A range of musical instruments, such as African skin drums, accordion, banjo, drums, fiddle, triangle, violins, makalpo - a stringed instrument, and zez from Madagascar, form part of Seychelles music as well as dances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ !!!!
